Moles

Moles

Moles are quite common, and most adults have at least ten or more of them on their bodies. Moles develop when several melanocyte cells, which contain melanin, cluster together. Moles are usually harmless, but there is a possibility that they could become cancerous. Dr. Brian Dubow, the triple board-certified dermatologist at Dr. Dubow Dermatology in Beverly Hills, CA, examines moles for signs of skin cancer, performs mole removal, and provides other related services.

Moles and Skin Cancer Warning Signs

Moles are usually benign and not cancerous. However, a type of skin cancer called melanoma could develop. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, but it is highly curable when diagnosed and treated during the early stages. Some ways to detect melanoma and other types of skin cancer early include undergoing annual skin cancer screenings and performing monthly self-exams that include looking for changes in moles.

There are several things to look for when examining moles. ABCDE is an acronym that makes it easy to remember what to look for: asymmetry, border, color, diameter, and evolving. See a dermatologist for a skin cancer screening if a mole has any of the following warning signs:

  • Asymmetry — Moles tend to be symmetrical. If one side of the mole differs in size, color, or shape, that is a warning sign of possible skin cancer.
  • Border — Moles should have well defined borders. It is a warning sign when the border is irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined.
  • Color — Healthy moles are a consistent color throughout. Moles with multiple colors, such as brown with black dots, could be malignant.
  • Diameter — A normal mole is usually less than 6mm in diameter (about 1/4 inch). A large diameter greater than 6mm is a warning sign of skin cancer.
  • Evolving—Healthy, benign moles usually do not change much over time. Any change in size, shape, color, or texture is a warning sign.

Contact our office in Beverly Hills, CA, about suspicious moles that are asymmetrical, have a poorly defined border, or any of the other warning signs of possible skin cancer. A biopsy or other diagnostic testing can be performed to determine if skin cancer is present. If the mole is malignant, Dr. Dubow will develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Mole Removal Methods

Skin moles can be removed for many reasons, even if not malignant. Depending on its location, a mole can cause physical discomfort if it frequently gets caught on clothing. Some individuals also prefer to have moles removed for aesthetic reasons. Several effective methods are available for safely removing unwanted moles, including freezing, burning, shaving, and excision. Our skilled dermatologist can recommend the right removal option for you.

Moles are usually harmless, but it is important to examine them regularly for any changes that could indicate skin cancer. Call Dr. Dubow Dermatology in Beverly Hills, CA, at (310) 888-4070 to schedule an appointment for a skin cancer screening and examination of your moles.
